Το ελληνικό τραγούδι με τις πολλές διασκευές
«Μισιρλού», η αθάνατη
Το όνομα Μισιρλού όταν τραγουδιέται, ακούγεται σαν ξόρκι ή σαν επίκληση στην ξωτική ομορφιά άγνωστης αραβικής καλλονής. Η «Μισιρλού» είναι ίσως το ελληνικό τραγούδι με τις περισσότερες διασκευές και ηχογραφήσεις: ξεκινά ως ρεμπέτικο, χαραγμένο με μικρασιατικές μελωδικές γραμμές, περνάει από την τζαζ και τη λάτιν, εκσυγχρονίζεται μέσω του σερφ ροκ, επανέρχεται στα γίντις της εβραϊκής παράδοσης.
Ο κιθαρίστας Ντικ Ντέιλ έδωσε τη ροκ εκδοχή που έγινε τα τελευταία χρόνια ευρέως γνωστή από την ταινία «Pulp Fiction»
Το 1994, ακούγεται στην εκτέλεση του κιθαρίστα Ντικ Ντέιλ από την ταινία του Ταραντίνο, «PulpFiction», φέτος με παραλλαγμένους στίχους και με σταθερή τη μελωδία το συγκρότημα «Μπλακ Αϊντ Πις» («Παμπ ιτ»), το στοιχειώνει με ποπ ραπ και χιπ χοπ και το ξανακάνει επιτυχία που χορεύεται τρελά.
Τις τελευταίες μέρες το άκουγε η Ραλλού, η κόρη του συναδέλφου Νίκου Ντόκα και της Μαργαρίτας Κουλεντιανού. Αυτή μας έδωσε την αφορμή, ώστε να αναζητήσουμε τη γέννηση και την καταγωγή αυτού του τραγουδιού. Το Μισιρλού, που παράγεται από την τουρκική λέξη Misirli (έλκει τη ρίζα της από το αραβικό Misr), σημαίνει Αιγύπτια ή το κορίτσι από την Αίγυπτο. Δεν έχει αποδειχθεί ποιος είναι ο δημιουργός του τραγουδιού, γι' αυτό και ανήκει στην κατηγορία των αδέσποτων.
Ο Αμερικανός εθνομουσικολόγος Ρίτσαρντ Σπότσγουντ, στη μελέτη του «Ethnic Music on records. Volume ΙΙΙ. Easter Europe. 1893-1942» (1990) υποστηρίζει ότι ο ρεμπέτης Τέτος Δημητριάδης (ψευδώνυμα: Τάκης Νικολάου, Νώντας Σγουρός) ηχογράφησε πρώτη φορά το 1927 στην Αμερική τη «Μισιρλού». Κι όχι ο Ελληνοαμερικανός Νικ Ρουμπάνης, ο οποίος το παρουσίασε το 1941 σε τζαζ εκδοχή, αναφέροντας τον εαυτό του ως συνθέτη, προσθέτοντας την ανατολίτικη μελωδία. Τους αγγλικούς στίχους συνυπέγραψαν οι S.K. Russell, Norman Wise, Μ. Leeds.
Ομως, αυτός που το σφράγισε στο μέτωπο με την πέτρα του ροκ είναι ο σερφ κιθαρίστας Ντικ Ντέιλ (γενν. 1937, ψευδώνυμο του Ρίτσαρντ Μανσούρ, Λιβανέζος από πατέρα και Πολωνός από μητέρα) στο δίσκο «Surfers' Choice» (1962). Το χρωμάτισε, όταν του ζητήθηκε, από έναν δεκάχρονο να αυτοσχεδιάσει σε μια χορδή. Τότε θυμήθηκε ότι κατά την παιδική του ηλικία, όταν τον πήγαιναν σε γάμους, ακουγόταν συχνά αυτή η μελωδία. Τα δικά του χνάρια ακολούθησαν οι «Μπιτς Μπόις», έναν χρόνο μετά, στο άλμπουμ «Surfin USA».
Tο ραπ συγκρότημα «Μπλακ Αϊντ Πις» το ξανάκανε φέτος επιτυχία
Σε όλα τα είδη
Εκτοτε, οι εκατοντάδες διασκευές σε μουσικά είδη ουκ έχουσι αριθμό: Κρόνος Κούαρτετ «Κάραβαν» (2000), Μάρτιν Ντένι (1911-2005), Γούντι Χέρμαν (1913-1987), Αρθουρ Λάιμαν (1932-2002) «Taboo», Βίντσε Γκουαρέλντι (1928-1976), Τζέιμς Χιλ «On the other hand» (2004), Αλμπέρτο Γκρεγκουόλντο «Peaces of dance» (2004).
Συν τοις άλλοις, μουσικές λαϊκές παραδόσεις από διαφορετικές χώρες συναντήθηκαν στη «Μισιρλού»: το συγκρότημα «Λος Πασάρος Σεφαράδις», που αποτελείται από Εβραίους και Τούρκους μουσικούς, ο Γαλλοαλγερινός Ρασίντ Ταχά στα αραβικά («Τζανγκλ Φίξιον»), τα γίντις της μουσικής ομάδας «Κλεζμέρ Κονσερβατόρι Μπαντ», ο Σέρβος τραγουδιστής Στάνισα Στόσιτς.
Πρωτοπαίχτηκε στην Αθήνα το 1927, από την ρεμπέτικη ορχήστρα του Μιχάλη Πατρινού. Ηχογραφείται από τους ίδιους συντελεστές το 1930 και έναν χρόνο μετά στα στούντιο της Νέας Υόρκης. Η Ρόζα Εσκενάζυ, η Σοφία Βέμπο, η Δανάη, ο Νίκος Γούναρης, ο Μανώλης Αγγελόπουλος και η Καλλιόπη Βέττα το ανέστησαν, ο καθένας ξεχωριστά με το ηχόχρωμα της φωνής του, ενώ τα τελευταία χρόνια το ανακάλυψαν αρκετά ελληνικά ροκ συγκροτήματα. Οπως τα «Last Drive» (1986, «Underworld shakedown»), «343 kg. Κρέας», «Sunsteps», «Sound Explosion» («Misirlou the greek»), «Invisible Surfers».
Δεν πρέπει να ξεχάσουμε ότι ακούστηκε κατά την τελετή λήξης των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων του 2004. Και ανακαλύψαμε ότι έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί στα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια «Drummania», «Guitar freak», «Guitar Hero 2» και στο διαφημιστικό του βιντεοπαιχνιδιού «Rayman Raving Rabbids».

BACKGROUND: Misirlou, the tune, was published as sheet music in the 1930's by Nicholas Roubanis, a Columbia University musical scholar and professor. The words to the song are by Fred Wise, Milton Leeds, and S.K. Russell.
In the 1940's, the Mitchell Ayers band recorded the tune. Jan August had his first and biggest hit with the tune in the late 1940's and it was a hit for band leader Wayne King. "Dick Dale and His Del-Tones," as well as "The Beach Boys," recorded the tune in 1963; and other surfer bands subsequently put it into their repertoires. Misirlou was featured in the opening scene of the movie Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino in the late 1990's.
In 1945, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, women's musical organization asked Professor Brunhilde E. Dorsch to organize an international dance group at Duquesne University to honor America's World War II allies. She contacted Mercine Nesotas, who taught several Greek dances, including Syrtos Haniotikos (from Crete), which she called Kritikos, but for which they had no music. Because Pittsburgh's Greek-American community did not know Cretan music, Pat Mandros Kazalas, a music student, suggested the tune Misirlou, an Arabian Serenade, although slower, might fit the dance.
The dance was first performed at a program to honor America's allies of World War II at Stephen Foster Memorial Hall in Pittsburgh on March 6, 1945. A folk dance leader in Pittsburgh, Monty Mayo, introduced the dance in New York and Michael Herman listed it in his catalogue, eventually calling it "Misirlou" so as not to confuse it with the genuine "Kritikos Syrtos" and Brunhilde introduced the dance at Oglebay Park Camp in 1948.
The dance was first noted in Partners All, Places All by Mimi Kirkell and Irma Schaffnit in 1949. The rest, as they say, is history. Misirlou is danced all over the world, even by the local Pittsburgh Greeks.

3 Moving in to the L in RLOD, step R (ct 1); step L next to R (ct 2); step R (ct 3); rise on ball of R, raising L knee slightly with L ft close to R calf (ct 4);
4 Still facing to the L in RLOD, step L bwd (ct 1); step R next to L (ct 2); step L bwd (ct 3); pivot on L to face ctr (ct 4).
