Hydra Rebetiko Conference - 16-19 October 2008 CfP

For those of you who have not already received this information, I write to inform you that:

The 8th edition of the HYDRA REBETIKO CONFERENCE will take place on the
Island of Hydra from Thursday 16 October to Sunday 19 October 2008

Interested parties are invited to present papers.

Our subject is the Rebetiko music of Greece. However we also study many and
varied aspects that have a bearing on that music.

This year we are particularly interested in musical interchanges and
commonalities between the musics of Greece and Turkey. Partly this will be
explored through examining the repertoires and histories of two instruments,
the bouzouki and baglama. Partly it will involve looking at cross-over
repertoires. This will include locations away from mainland Greece - for
instance diasporas in the United States.

The conference is organised by the London-based Institute of Rebetology.

You may be interested to know that this year's conference takes place as the end point of an international tour which will take the "Famous SOAS Rebetiko Band" to both Istanbul and Athens for a series of concerts and musical seminars. This band, with a joint Greco-Turkish membership, has its origins in musical seminars held at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The Istanbul and Athens events are open to the general public.

ISTANBUL-ATHENS TOUR - OCTOBER 2008
Basic information

1 . PROGRAMME

Friday 10 October:
Morning: Arrive Istanbul. Check into hotels etc. Hotels about £15 per night for singles.
Afternoon: Turkish bath at Cemberlitas hammam for those who wish (cost c. £7)
Evening: Ferry trip to Asian shore. Maybe Uskudar. Take instruments. Waterside supper.

Saturday 11 October:
Morning: Seminars at University.
Afternoon: Seminars and sound check.
Evening: Public concert at the Escape-Kazablanka restaurant on Istiklal Street, as an opening event of the 2009 Pera Festival.

Sunday 12 October:
Morning: Service at Patriarchate for those who wish.
Afternoon: Free
Evening: Concert for Greek community, in Erthro theatre, Fenikoy.

Monday 13 October:
Morning: Free
Lunchtime: Mini-concert for workers in Rüstempasa Han
Afternoon: Jam session at Balkan Cultural Centre
Evening: Waterside musical fish supper at Persembe Pazar, near Galata Bridge.

Tuesday 14 October:
Free day

Wednesday 15 October:
Morning: Fly to Athens
Afternoon: Visit to Anayionaki Folk Instruments Museum for those who wish.
Evening: Informal concert at a venue in Piraeus. Possibility of late night jam session in a rebetiko joint.

Thursday 16 October:
Morning: Musical seminars at UNESCO/International Dance Council
Afternoon: Musical seminars continued
Evening: Travel to Hydra. Thursday evening jam session at Lulu's Restaurant.

Friday 17 to Sunday 19 October: Hydra Rebetiko Conference. [Please note: The SOAS Rebetiko Band will play a guest set in the Saturday night concert at the Douskos Restaurant, 18 October. The rest of the programme will be played by Kyriakos Gouventas and colleagues.]

Ρωτάω γιατί κάνοντας save as στη φωτο βγαίνει ο τίτλος "koemtzis" κι αναρωτιέμαι μήπως μου διαφεύγει τίποτα...

Κατά τα άλλα το θέμα της συνάντησης πολύ ενδιαφέρον.
Το μόνο κρίμα, ότι για πάνω από μισό αιώνα έχει υποφέρει στην προκρούστεια κλίνη της θέσης ότι "ανήκουμε στη δύση".
Με αποτέλεσμα να περνάνε από λογοκρισία κι οι μουσικοί δρόμοι της ανατολής. Πάλι καλά που η εκκλησιαστική μουσική τη γλύτωσε.
"Της λείπει το 'να της ποδάρι" που λέει και το τραγούδι.
Το παίξανε στο ζάρι, αλλά τώρα η "ρεμπετολογία" (rebetology, για να είμαι ακριβέστερος) θα βάλει τα πράγματα στη θέση τους...

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον το θέμα, κι ας μου συγχωρέσουν οι διοργανωτές τον επιφυλακτικό τόνο. Αυτός οφείλεται ακριβώς στο θεματολογικό ενδιαφέρον...

The Instabul (Is tin Poli - used to say the Romioi people sometime...) tour, is something that every fan of rebetiko or musician of the Orient music, could dream !!!

The Hydra conferance is something different that i haven't participate till now.
It seems to will the search and the theoretical approach of the musical phenomenon of the Greek world "Rebetiko" and also to make spontaneous feasts or setted unplugged gigs to the graphic Hydra island where Leonard Cohen have glorified in the past !!
Actually, i see that most of the times the content of the CONFERANCE, diverges to proove that rebetiko is a matter of the Turkish people also !! Though people οf different nationalities lived together for 4 hundr. years that means not necesserily, that the cultural characteristics where so close and united between them especially for the Turks case that have been (historically) rough and where much less in population !!
The birth of rebetiko might take place at the Smyrna's alleys or at the Palamidi prison as Ferris suggests ... Ed Emery seems to accept the participation of the Othoman element at this genesis, something that never had admitted people from the neibhour country. I think maybe some false thoughts, want to share the glory and the fame (maybe..) of the rebetiko now that it's a word wide accectable strong musical monument !!
Otherwise i sumbit facts like that my friends !!

As Agis says, the Greek authorities seem so poor and opposite to the REBETIKO music and situation so, finally, it's an honour an Englishman to take those initiative !!
