Take a look here, Yiovan:

This guy says that Nikos Mathesis was his great-uncle. Maybe you could send him an e-mail or something.

Sorry about that. As far as I know there's no such biografy in english (yet). And it's even rare and difficult to find one in greek (a good one I mean).

I've just found this video about Nikos Mathesis, made by this Ta-ki guy who is said to be his grand-nephew. It's an arrangement (in a hard rock style) of the well known song of Kostis Mpezos "Stin ypoga" (in the basement).

There is also a biography of Nikos Mathesis, in greek, I think from IANOS editions. As far as I know (from readings of course) however, Mathesis was not really a creator of rebetika music. He wrote the lyrics for some songs (for example "Gata" (cat)), and he was friend with several composers and also recording company directors. This way he is said to have helped Markos start his career, although later on these two became enemies. Probably because of a woman, for which Markos said he wrote "Mavra matia mavra frydia". Personally, although I appreciate a lot the entire history of rebetiko, including all people that played a role in it, I wasn't very happy reading about Mathesis and his violent behavior against people like Markos and Bayanteras who were much much more important in this history than he was.
